Description

System Configuration and Capacity

The Seg-Flow® PS and Director™ combination provides automated sampling from up to 16 bioreactors and delivers samples to the BioProfile FLEX2 or other connected analytical instruments. Unlike many automated sampling systems, the Seg-Flow connects directly to the FLEX2 application programming interface (API), providing a more stable and reliable connection between the sampling system and the analyzer. The system can also be configured to route samples to as many as four analyzers, allowing multiple critical process parameters to be measured through a single automated sampling platform.

For smaller configurations, the Seg-Flow PS can connect up to two bioreactors directly to the BioProfile FLEX2 without requiring a Director. When more than two bioreactors are connected, the Director manages sample routing and coordination between the vessels and the analyzer.

The Director coordinates sample routing, analyzer communication, and data acquisition and includes a built-in fraction collector. Samples can be delivered directly to the BioProfile FLEX2 for automated measurement of cell density, viability, nutrients, metabolites, gases, and other key bioprocess parameters. Additional samples are automatically collected, cooled, and retained for offline testing or further analysis.

The Seg-Flow PS and Director combination supports both cell-containing and cell-free sampling applications, providing flexibility for batch, fed-batch, and perfusion processes. Automated sampling schedules can be customized by vessel, allowing users to establish different sampling frequencies based on individual process requirements.

Analytical results from the BioProfile FLEX2 are automatically acquired and associated with the correct bioreactor and sampling event. The data can be used for real-time process monitoring, trending, and optional automated feed-control strategies based on measured nutrient or metabolite concentrations.

The system’s OPC UA connectivity enables BioProfile FLEX2 results and Seg-Flow process data to be transferred to compatible SCADA systems, distributed control systems, historians, and bioprocess management platforms. This provides centralized access to analytical data and supports advanced process monitoring, control, and automation.

Benefits of Automated Integration

By automating sample collection, delivery, analysis, cooled sample retention, and data transfer, the Seg-Flow PS and Director system reduces manual sampling requirements, improves sampling consistency, minimizes operator interaction, and provides more frequent analytical data for enhanced bioprocess understanding and control.
